About Us

The Skagit County Meals on Wheels Program has a thirty year history of working to provide services to meet the priority issue of hunger that exists among senior citizens residing in Skagit County. The incidence of malnutrition is quite prevalent in the senior population due to factors such as limited income, isolation, chronic diseases, food insecurity, mobility difficulties, and mouth and dental problems.

The primary function of the Meals on Wheels Program is to provide nutritious, noontime meals to senior citizens, age 60 and older, who have difficulty leaving their home unassisted and who are unable to prepare their own meals.  In fact, Skagit County is one of the few programs in Washington State that can still deliver hot, nutritious meals to seniors in the community.  Each meal distributed by our program is designed to provide one-third of the Recommended Daily Dietary Allowances.  By using only the freshest ingredients, they are prepared Monday through Friday at our central kitchen and are delivered at lunchtime by volunteers – providing the daily one-on-one contact that many seniors look forward to every day.

Meals are provided on a donation basis, and there is no financial eligibility criteria.  Our suggested donation is $3.00 per meal; however, the average meal costs us over $6.00 to prepare.

Unfortunately, Meals on Wheels operations today are challenged by a triple threat:  Rising costs, cuts in grant funding, and increased demands for service.  More and more seniors are in need of this important service. As a non-profit organization (under the Skagit Council on Aging), we rely on many sources for revenue in order to provide services, in addition to 200+ volunteers.
