Volunteer Opportunities

There are several volunteer opportunities available for the Meals on Wheels Program, for those 18 and older (sorry, we are unable to allow minors to volunteer in our facilities).

The volunteer opportunities are available at all locations:
Anacortes, Burlington, Mt. Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, and Concrete.

Job Title: Volunteer Home-Delivered Meal Driver
Hours of Service: As a Volunteer Driver, a routine shift is 2-3 hours per day (10:30am – 1:00pm), 1 day a week.
Job Responsibilities: Deliver hot and/or frozen meals to home-bound participants of the Meals on Wheels Program.

Duties:

  • Help pack food for hot home-delivered meal participants.
  • Using your personal vehicle, deliver meals to participants promptly according to route sheet provided by the Site Manager.
  • Collect participant donations; return donations to the Site Manager.
  • Return food carriers to the Site Manager.
  • Notify Site Manager if a meal participant is not home, is ill, or has any messages or problems, etc.
  • If needed, notify Site Manager by phone while on the delivery route.
Special Requirements:
  • Must have valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be courteous to employees and participants in the meal program.
  • Moderate physical ability to stand, walk and lift.
  • Must pass a Background Check.

Job Title: Volunteer Kitchen/Dining Room Helper
Hours of Service: As a Volunteer Kitchen/Dining Room Helper, a routine shift is up to 4 hours a day (usually 9:00am – 1:00pm), 1 day a week.
Job Responsibilities: Assist Site Manager with preparation and packaging of home-delivered and congregate meals.

Duties:

  • Helps package food for hot home-delivered meal participants.
  • Assists in dishing up and portioning out meal components.
  • Preparation of the dining room, which includes place setting and clearing tables after meals.
  • May be asked to assist in dish-washing if no dish-washer is present.
Special Requirements:
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be courteous to employees and participants in the meal program.
  • Moderate physical ability to stand, walk and lift.
  • Must pass a Background Check.
  • Must have a valid Food Handler’s Permit Card.

Job Title: Dishwasher
Hours of Service: As a Volunteer Dishwasher, a routine shift is 1 hour (12:00pm-1:00pm), 1 day a week.
Job Responsibilities: Washes dishes after Senior Center Congregate noontime meal.

Duties:

  • Helps clear dishes from tables after Senior Center noontime meal.
  • Washes dishes and assists in putting them away.
Special Requirements:
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be courteous to employees and participants in the meal program.
  • Moderate physical ability to stand, walk and lift.
  • Must pass a Background Check.
  • Must have a valid Food Handler’s Permit Card.

Job Title: Substitute Delivery Driver, Kitchen/Dining Room Helper or Dishwasher
Hours of Service: As a Substitute Volunteer Driver, Kitchen Helper or Dishwasher, your schedule can vary depending on the needs of the program and your availability. You may pick days or hours available as a substitute.

Job Title: Meals on Wheels Pet Food Delivery Program Volunteer Driver
Hours of Service: As a Volunteer Meals on Wheels Pet Food Delivery Driver, your schedule can vary depending on your availability. Pet Food would need to be picked up between 8:00am and 4:00pm, at our Administration Office in Burlington. Route may take 1-2 hours to complete, 1-2 times per month.
Job Responsibilities: Deliver pet food to home-bound participants of the Meals on Wheels Program.

Duties:

  • Using your personal vehicle, deliver pet food to participants promptly according to route sheet provided by the Nutrition Coordinator.
  • Notify Nutrition Coordinator if a participant is not home, is ill, or has any messages or problems, etc.
  • If needed, notify Nutrition Coordinator by phone while on the delivery route.
  • May assist in the sorting and packaging of pet food for specified route.
Special Requirements:
  • Must have valid Washington State Driver’s license.
  • Clean and neat appearance.
  • Must be courteous to employees and participants in the meal program.
  • Moderate physical ability to stand, walk and lift.
  • Must pass a Background Check.
